Delay in Blue Area parking plaza leaves Islamabad businesses, commuters frustrated

ISLAMABAD: The long-delayed multi-story parking plaza in Blue Area remains incomplete more than two years after its July 2023 deadline, worsening traffic congestion, choking service roads, and leaving businesses struggling in one of Islamabad’s busiest commercial hubs.

Official correspondence shows repeated concerns raised by stakeholders. In a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif dated November 21, 2024, Nayatel CEO Wahaj Siraj warned that blocked lanes and prolonged construction have created an “unfavorable environment,” particularly during visits by foreign investors and dignitaries.

Earlier, on October 10, 2024, a letter to CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa detailed the severe disruptions faced by over 900 employees and the general public. The situation worsened after the Islamabad Traffic Police removed temporary parking spaces, leaving commuters and businesses with limited options.

Local restaurants and commercial outlets are also feeling the impact. Customers complain of difficulties in finding parking, which has led to declining footfall and additional traffic bottlenecks during peak hours.

Records dating back to March 2022 show multiple appeals to the Capital Development Authority (CDA) for alternate parking and timely completion of the project. However, stakeholders say little progress has been made. They are now demanding urgent action to clear blocked service roads and expedite the project to restore normal traffic flow and business activity in the area.
