Faulty design and lack of safeguards endanger lives on Gilgit-Skardu Road

GILGIT: A recent letter from the Chief Secretary of Gilgit-Baltistan has raised serious concerns about the alarming safety conditions on the Jaglot-Skardu Road (JSR), one of the region’s critical lifelines. The road, a crucial artery connecting Baltistan to the rest of the country, has become synonymous with danger due to geometric inadequacies, loose debris, and a lack of protective measures, leading to a tragic loss of life.

Alarming Statistics: Loss of Lives and Property

According to official data, 46 road traffic accidents (RTAs) occurred on the Jaglot-Skardu Road from August 2023 to December 15, 2024. These accidents resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries, underscoring the dire need for immediate action. The incidents are primarily attributed to loose rocks, landslides during the rainy season, and sharp curves that challenge driver visibility and control.

The Chief Secretary described these conditions as a “constant danger to commuters,” highlighting the extensive blasting during construction as a contributing factor to the unstable terrain.

Key Concerns Raised

The letter pinpointed several critical safety deficiencies on the road:

  1. Hanging Rocks and Debris: Loose rocks from construction blasting pose a significant landslide risk, especially during rains.
  2. Sharp Bends: Dangerous curves, particularly in accident-prone areas like Malopa and Burundi, impair visibility and lead to frequent mishaps.
  3. Lack of Safety Structures: The absence of rockfall protection shades or galleries leaves commuters vulnerable to falling debris.

Recommended Safety Measures

To address these hazards, the Chief Secretary proposed a series of measures aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing accident risks:

  • Improved Road Geometry: Realigning sharp curves, particularly in high-risk areas, to ensure smoother and safer travel.
  • Protective Structures: Installing rockfall protection galleries and safety shades along vulnerable stretches to shield vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Debris Removal: Clearing loose rocks and unstable debris to mitigate landslide risks.

Economic and Social Importance of the JSR

The Jaglot-Skardu Road is a vital link for the economic and social connectivity of the Baltistan region. It supports tourism, trade, and the movement of essential goods, making its safety a matter of utmost priority. The Chief Secretary stressed that improving the road would not only save lives but also significantly enhance the quality of life for residents and commuters.

Call to Action

The letter was addressed to high-ranking officials, including the Chairman of the National Highway Authority (NHA), urging them to prioritize the proposed safety measures. The Chief Secretary expressed confidence that under the leadership of the concerned authorities, these critical improvements could be implemented promptly, ensuring a safer future for the region.

The rising death toll and the economic reliance on this precarious route demand immediate intervention. As the gateway to Baltistan, the Jaglot-Skardu Road must be transformed into a safer passage to prevent further tragedies and ensure sustainable development for the region.
