Free Wi-Fi coming to 40 railway stations across Punjab: Railways Minister

In a step toward modernizing public transport services, the federal government is launching free Wi-Fi services at 40 railway stations across Punjab, Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi announced during a recent interview with a private TV channel.

The initiative aims to improve passenger convenience—especially for those on long journeys or waiting at stations—by offering internet access as part of the broader plan to digitize and upgrade Pakistan Railways.

The minister revealed that the government plans to invest Rs350 billion to enhance eight major branch lines in Punjab. The move is part of a wider infrastructure push to revive and modernize rail transport in the country.

Abbasi said discussions are also underway with the Sindh government to introduce similar upgrades in that province, indicating that the digitization effort will soon extend nationwide.

He highlighted that long-term projects like Main Line-1 (ML-1) are crucial to improving operational efficiency and reliability. Preparations for Main Line-2 (ML-2) investment are also underway, aimed at expanding the country’s rail connectivity.

The free Wi-Fi initiative, coupled with other modernization efforts, reflects the government’s commitment to making rail travel in Pakistan more comfortable, efficient, and digitally connected.
