Government appoints new members to PCSIR Council for a three-year term

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Government has reconstituted the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) Council by appointing new members for a three-year term. The appointments were announced through a notification issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology dated October 30, 2024, in accordance with Sections 4(1) and 5(1) of the PCSIR Act, 1973, and were approved by the Federal Government (Case No. 522/Rule-19/2024/868).

The council, tasked with advancing scientific and industrial research in Pakistan, now comprises representatives from federal ministries, PCSIR officials, and key figures from the industrial sector.

Four federal government representatives have been included: the Joint Secretary (Organizational) from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Joint Secretary from the Finance Division, the Joint Secretary (Commerce) from the Ministry of Commerce and Textile Industry, and the Joint Secretary (Industries) from the Ministry of Industries and Production.

Three officials from PCSIR have also been inducted: Dr. Quratulain Syed, Director General, PCSIR Labs Complex, Lahore; Engr. Abdul Wahab, Officer-in-Charge/Director, Cast Metal & Foundry Technology Centre, Daska; and Mr. Tariq Omar Khan, Director, PCSIR Labs, Skardu.

Additionally, five industry leaders have joined the council: Mr. Nadeem Khalid, CEO of Herbion Group of Companies; Ms. Sadia Aamir Arshad, Director of I.K. Group Faisalabad and CEO of J.K. Foods Faisalabad; Mr. Zahid Ullah, CEO of Alpha Pipe Industries Pvt. Ltd. and Agro Pack Ltd., Peshawar; Engr. Bashir Ahmed Shahwani, CEO of Engr. Bashir Ahmed Shahwani & Co. and HBR Cement Grinding Mill, Quetta; and Mr. Waheed Ahmed, Director of United Cold Storage Karachi and Iftekhar Ahmed & Co, who is also founding chairman of Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchant Association.

The newly formed council is expected to play a pivotal role in guiding research initiatives, formulating policies, and fostering collaboration between scientific institutions and the industrial sector. The integration of representatives from public and private domains aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and its practical applications, promoting industrial development in Pakistan.

The notification, issued by Deputy Secretary (Organizational) Aamir Hussain Ghazi, has been circulated to all relevant stakeholders, including federal ministries and PCSIR officials.
