Govt to draft national marble policy for sector reforms

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to introduce a National Marble Policy aimed at addressing structural issues in the marble and stone sector and promoting value-added exports, officials said on Monday.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan, attended by representatives of the All Pakistan Marble Industry Association and the Pakistan Stone Development Company (PASDEC).

According to officials, the meeting reviewed existing challenges in the marble trade, including low value addition, lack of modern processing technology, and limited branding and market access. Stakeholders discussed possible policy measures, tax incentives, and facilitation to increase the sector’s contribution to exports and employment.

The proposed policy will outline mechanisms for industrial recognition of the marble sector and steps for improving competitiveness through training, technical assistance, and collaboration with international partners.

Sources said the government has asked PASDEC and the marble industry to develop proposals for technology transfer and capacity building in collaboration with Italy, one of the global leaders in stone processing and design.

Pakistan possesses significant reserves of high-quality marble and granite, but exports have remained limited due to outdated machinery, fragmented production, and insufficient value addition, officials noted. The planned policy is expected to address these gaps through coordinated regulatory and institutional support.
