Govt will act after PTI finalizes protest plans, says Interior Minister Naqvi

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Friday addressed multiple national issues, ranging from the PTI’s planned protest to Afghan nationals’ status and the crackdown on illegal housing societies in Islamabad.

Speaking to reporters, Naqvi said the government would respond to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s protest scheduled for August 5 once the party completes its preparations.

“Let PTI complete their preparations first, and then we will take our own measures,” he remarked, avoiding a direct confrontation narrative at this stage.

Crackdown on illegal Afghan residents
Discussing Pakistan’s stance on Afghan nationals, Naqvi stressed that no extensions would be granted to those staying illegally. He highlighted that Iran expelled 300,000 Afghan nationals within the past two weeks, and Pakistan would maintain a firm approach on the matter while continuing diplomatic engagement with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Illegal housing societies under scrutiny
Turning to urban governance, the minister announced a large-scale operation against 133 illegal housing societies in Islamabad, emphasizing that the crackdown on unauthorized developments is already underway.

Environmental and infrastructure issues
On environmental concerns, Naqvi warned of a potential return of smog in Islamabad, saying efforts are being made to expand green spaces in the capital to mitigate future risks.

He also addressed infrastructure issues, noting that a road in the E-11 sector was damaged due to Sui Gas department excavation. “The matter will be resolved soon,” he assured.

Security and foreign relations
On the security front, the minister clarified his earlier remarks about law enforcement in Balochistan, stating that the term “control” was used metaphorically in reference to counterterrorism efforts.

He further highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic role in preventing escalation in the Iran-Israel conflict, crediting the prime minister and the army chief for helping to ease tensions.

Lastly, he mentioned that the Ministry of Interior is considering appointing a new officer to oversee armed institutions, with the final decision pending.
