Govt yet to announce tobacco price as buying season nears

ISLAMABAD: With the tobacco purchasing season set to begin early next month, the federal government has yet to announce the Minimum Indicative Price (MIP) for 2025—creating uncertainty for farmers and industry stakeholders.

Traditionally, the MIP is notified five to six months ahead of the June–September buying season to give growers and buyers clarity on pricing. However, this year’s delay has raised concerns across the sector, particularly as multinational companies prepare to purchase tobacco based on official price guidelines.

At a recent high-level meeting with a delegation from Philip Morris International, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain stressed the urgency of issuing the long-pending MIP notification. He directed that the process be expedited to avoid financial disruption for farmers and exporters.

“Tobacco is a key contributor to rural employment, national revenue, and export income,” said the minister. “Timely policy action is critical to protect the interests of growers and ensure a stable investment climate.”

Hussain reiterated the government’s commitment to a predictable and efficient regulatory framework that encourages responsible business practices and fosters long-term sectoral growth. He also highlighted the importance of centralized federal oversight to prevent fragmented regulations that could hinder the industry’s development.

The minister acknowledged the positive role of multinational corporations operating within Pakistan’s legal framework and contributing to national economic growth. He assured the delegation that the concerns raised are being addressed, and reaffirmed the ministry’s intent to work proactively with all stakeholders.

It was also revealed during the meeting that Pakistan’s tobacco exports have now surpassed the $100 million mark, underscoring the sector’s increasing value in terms of foreign exchange earnings.

As the government aims to align regulatory measures with economic priorities, the resolution of the MIP issue will be a critical test of its support for agriculture-linked industries poised to bolster Pakistan’s export footprint.
