Heavy rains trigger flood warnings in Punjab, PDMA urges vigilance

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of severe rainfall and flash floods across the province over the next 24 hours, urging people to take precautions and avoid risky areas.

According to PDMA officials, rainfall has already been recorded in Murree, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, and Bahawalpur. Northern and upper Punjab districts remain under threat of torrential downpours and cloudbursts.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia instructed district administrations in vulnerable areas to stay prepared and maintain round-the-clock monitoring.

The latest fact sheet revealed that the Indus River is at low-level flood at Tarbela and Taunsa, and medium-level flood at Kalabagh and Chashma. The Sutlej River is also experiencing a low-level flood at Ganda Singh Wala, while the Chenab, Ravi, and Jhelum remain at safe levels.

Reservoir updates showed Tarbela Dam nearly full at 98%, Mangla Dam at 68% capacity, while Indian dams are currently 70% full — raising concerns of sudden water discharges.

The PDMA has strongly advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel, keep children away from rivers and streams, and remain cautious in low-lying areas.

Thankfully, no casualties or property damage were reported in Punjab during the past 24 hours.

However, the situation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa remains grim, where floods have caused 307 deaths in just 48 hours, making authorities in Punjab extra cautious.

Meta Description: Punjab PDMA warns of heavy rains and flash floods as Indus and Sutlej rivers swell. Citizens urged to adopt safety measures and avoid low-lying areas.
