Iranian envoy seeks to quadruple trade volume with Pakistan, proposes bold initiatives

ISLAMABAD – Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Raza Amiri Moghaddam has called for boosting the trade volume between the two countries from the current $2.7 billion to an ambitious $10 billion, proposing the transformation of the Pakistan-Iran border into a “commercial gateway” to strengthen bilateral trade ties.

During his visit to the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Ambassador Moghaddam stressed the need to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles and establish efficient mechanisms, including banking channels, to facilitate economic growth. He advocated regular interaction between the business communities of both nations to create a framework for joint ventures, citing Iran’s successful partnerships with Turkey as an example.

In a meeting with ICCI President Nasir Mansoor Qureshi, both sides explored avenues to enhance bilateral cooperation and agreed to work collaboratively to dismantle trade barriers for mutual benefit. To ensure effective implementation of their plans, a four-member committee—comprising two representatives from each country—was established for ongoing deliberations and coordination.

The ambassador highlighted the significant progress made in Pakistan-Iran relations in recent years but noted vast untapped potential for deeper collaboration. He proposed initiatives such as expanding border markets, opening additional border crossing points, and establishing Customs Facilitation Desks to streamline trade operations.

Strategic Ports and Regional Connectivity
Ambassador Moghaddam also emphasized the strategic importance of Gwadar and Chabahar ports, which are ideally located along key international trade routes connecting Central Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. He proposed joint utilization of these ports to unlock new opportunities for regional trade and economic integration.

As a gesture of goodwill, the ambassador extended an invitation from the President of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce and Industry to ICCI President Qureshi for a visit to Tehran.

Pakistani Perspective on Economic Cooperation
President ICCI Nasir Mansoor Qureshi highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to attracting foreign investment through a comprehensive roadmap and lucrative opportunities for international investors. He stressed the need to expand cooperation across diverse sectors, leveraging the expertise and capabilities of both nations.

While acknowledging the challenges posed by international pressures, regional instability, and security concerns, Mr. Qureshi expressed confidence in the resilience and determination of the business communities in both countries to overcome these obstacles. He emphasized the shared historical, cultural, and industrial strengths of Pakistan and Iran as key drivers of mutual collaboration.

To foster stronger ties, Mr. Qureshi proposed regular exchanges of trade and cultural delegations and the organization of B2B meetings to bring the business communities closer.

Looking Ahead
Both sides expressed optimism about unlocking the vast potential of Pakistan-Iran trade relations. They reaffirmed their commitment to building a stronger economic partnership for the mutual benefit of their nations.
