ISLAMABAD, July 24, 2025 – In a major step toward becoming a smart city, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced that M-Tags will soon be mandatory for all vehicles entering Islamabad, along with the rollout of a digital parking system and cashless payments across the city.
The decision was finalized in a high-level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, attended by top city officials, ICT representatives, and law enforcement authorities.
M-Tags Now Mandatory for Entry
Under the new policy, all vehicles entering Islamabad must have M-Tags – electronic identification tags. Vehicles without valid M-Tags will not be allowed entry into the capital.
Smart Digital Parking System
Alongside M-Tags, Islamabad will introduce a citywide digital parking model starting with commercial and high-traffic areas. Smart parking meters will be installed with variable pricing based on congestion levels—meaning busier areas will have slightly higher parking fees.
“Citizens will soon be able to reserve parking spots via a mobile app or QR code and pay digitally, saving time and reducing illegal parking,” said Chairman Randhawa.
The One Window Facilitation Center will also go fully digital, enabling payments for parking fees, property dues, and utility bills through apps, QR codes, or bank cards.
Better Traffic Flow & Enhanced Security
Authorities believe the move will reduce traffic congestion, eliminate manual cash transactions, and improve citywide surveillance and law enforcement tracking.
Daily surveys will monitor vehicle flow in and out of Islamabad to fine-tune the system. A public awareness campaign will be launched before full implementation to ensure citizens adapt smoothly.
“This is a step towards making Islamabad safer, smarter, and more efficient,” Randhawa stated.
