Islamabad to Get Electric Tram Service as CDA Plans Modern Eco-Friendly Transport Upgrade

Islamabad is set to welcome a modern electric tram service, marking a major leap toward sustainable urban mobility. The decision was made during a high-level meeting at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) Headquarters, chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa.

The new electric tram buses will serve the busiest routes in the city, featuring multiple compartments for higher passenger capacity. The design will prioritize accessibility for differently-abled individuals and women, ensuring an inclusive public transport experience.

The feasibility study for the tram system is currently underway, covering financial, operational, and business models. Chairman Randhawa stressed the importance of a self-sustaining financial plan, encouraging public-private partnerships to ensure long-term viability.

Islamabad’s electric bus project, which already carries over 90,000 passengers daily, has been praised for its punctuality, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendly benefits. The tram project will build on this success to provide cleaner, smarter, and more efficient transport options.

Key upgrades include:
✅ 140 existing bus stops being modernized
✅ 200+ new stops planned with digital screens for ads, schedules & safety info
✅ Smart ticketing systems and in-bus advertisements to boost revenue
✅ Dedicated electric buses for CDA employees

“This initiative will transform Islamabad into a smarter, cleaner, and more attractive capital while easing traffic congestion,” Randhawa said.
