Junaid Anwar Chaudhry vows maritime reforms to uplift Pakistan’s seafaring community

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening maritime safety, improving working conditions, and creating broader career opportunities for the nation’s seafaring workforce.

In his message on the occasion of International Seafarers’ Day, the Minister paid heartfelt tribute to the dedication and sacrifices of seafarers across the globe. He emphasized their indispensable role in sustaining the global economy and acknowledged the personal and professional challenges they endure while serving at sea.

Minister Chaudhry recognized the unwavering commitment of seafarers in maintaining the flow of international trade. Despite enduring long periods away from their families and working in often difficult conditions, these men and women continue to power global supply chains and economic connectivity.

He especially commended the courage of Pakistani seafarers during global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, when many remained on duty well beyond their contractual terms. Describing them as a source of national pride, he noted that their perseverance has elevated Pakistan’s standing in international maritime circles.

Highlighting the government’s continued focus on maritime welfare, the Minister outlined several recent initiatives launched by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs. These include the expansion of the Seafarers’ Welfare Fund, which now offers additional support for the families of seafarers affected by injury or loss of life, as well as improved access to healthcare and education.

The Ministry, in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has also introduced advanced training programs aimed at strengthening emergency response skills and promoting mental health awareness among seafarers, he added.

To prepare future generations of maritime professionals, the Minister emphasized the importance of partnerships with national and international maritime academies. These collaborations aim to deliver globally recognized training and certifications, ensuring Pakistani seafarers remain competitive in the international workforce.

Looking forward, Minister Junaid Chaudhry shared the government’s strategic vision to position Pakistan as a leading maritime nation. This vision includes the modernization of ports and shipyards, digital transformation of maritime operations, and alignment with global environmental and safety standards.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s steadfast resolve to protect the rights and well-being of maritime professionals. He stated that Pakistan remains united in honoring the vital contributions of its seafarers and is committed to building a more resilient, secure, and inclusive maritime future.
