KARACHI: Another tragic road accident has added to Karachi’s alarming traffic death toll, which has now climbed to 138 lives lost so far this year, local police reported on Tuesday.
The latest fatality occurred near Future Mor in Landhi, where a motorcyclist, Muhammad Fasih, was struck and killed by a water tanker. According to officials, the tanker driver fled the scene immediately after the collision but was later apprehended following a police operation.
This deadly incident has once again put a spotlight on the worsening road safety crisis in Karachi. It comes just days after another horrific crash on June 19, when a sand-loaded dumper truck overturned onto a car near Drigh Road at about 3:15 am. That tragedy killed a woman and a child and left two others seriously injured. Witnesses say the accident was caused by reckless racing between dumper drivers.
Similarly, on May 31, at least five more lives — including a college professor — were lost in multiple traffic mishaps across the city.
The frequency of high-speed truck and dumper accidents has raised serious alarm among residents and authorities alike. In response, law enforcement agencies have pledged tougher action and stricter checks to prevent heavy vehicles from flouting traffic laws.
Additional Inspector General Karachi Javed Alam Odho has called for better coordination among various departments to tackle the city’s traffic chaos, which is compounded by ongoing roadworks and urban expansion. He also emphasised that the Transport Department must play a central role in devising lasting solutions.
Citizens continue to demand urgent improvements in road conditions and robust implementation of traffic regulations to curb the rising death toll.
