Mass goat poisoning in Mirpurkhas sparks outrage

KARACHI: In a shocking and unprecedented incident, over 100 goats have reportedly been poisoned to death in Digri Taluka of Mirpurkhas, Sindh. The tragic event, which has left the local community stunned, has prompted Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar to launch an official inquiry.

According to Sohail Ahmed Jokhio, the Home Minister’s spokesperson, the goats died after consuming what is believed to be “poisonous grass.” He disclosed that the District Mirpurkhas police are actively investigating the case. A First Information Report (FIR) is being filed, and a committee led by the Crime Investigation Agency’s Deputy Superintendent of Police has been constituted to probe the incident thoroughly.

Possible Foul Play

Jokhio suggested that the poisoning could be linked to a “personal enmity” against the livestock owners. However, the investigation aims to uncover the facts behind this grievous act of animal cruelty.

The Home Minister has directed Mirpurkhas’ Senior Superintendent of Police to submit a detailed report. In a statement from his office, Lanjar emphasized the need for a comprehensive inquiry and assured “strict legal action against those found responsible.”

Pattern of Animal Cruelty in Sindh

This tragic event is the latest in a string of alarming animal cruelty cases reported across Sindh this year.

  • June 2024: A landlord in Sanghar reportedly mutilated a camel’s leg as punishment for grazing on his farmland.
  • June 2024: ACF Animal Rescue released horrifying footage of men throwing a dog from a building terrace in Karachi’s Liaquatabad, sparking widespread outrage.
  • June 18, 2024: A donkey had its ears severed in a village in Rawalpindi district, allegedly due to a land dispute.

Calls for Justice and Reform

Animal rights activists and local residents have expressed anger and disbelief over the Mirpurkhas incident, calling for immediate action to ensure justice. “This isn’t just an attack on animals—it’s a reflection of a society tolerating violence,” said a member of an animal welfare organization.

The Mirpurkhas mass poisoning highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws in Pakistan. The outcome of this investigation will likely set a precedent for addressing animal cruelty nationwide.
