NDMA issues nationwide monsoon alert: heavy rain, flood risk across Pakistan starting July 6

Get your umbrellas ready — the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a countrywide monsoon alert, warning of heavy rains and possible flash floods starting July 6.

The alert, based on data from the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), highlights potential danger zones, especially in the northern parts of the country between July 7 and 12, where flash floods and landslides may occur.

Widespread rainfall is expected across Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK). Cities like Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Karachi, Hyderabad, and Peshawar could see urban flooding due to heavy downpours and overwhelmed drainage systems.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) have stepped up efforts, placing Rescue 1122, WASA, and other emergency services on high alert.

In KP, districts like Swat, Chitral, and Peshawar are likely to be hit hard, while mountainous areas of GB and AJK face risks of landslides and overflowing rivers.

Sindh’s urban centers may face waterlogging and flooding due to moderate to heavy rain, while Balochistan’s PDMA has warned 20 districts to brace for flooding and water accumulation between July 4 and 8.

The NDMA has urged people to stay indoors during severe weather, avoid travel to flood-prone or high-altitude areas, and keep an eye on weather updates. Tourists heading to northern regions have been strongly advised to postpone their plans.

Local authorities have been told to make sure emergency response teams are fully prepared, drainage systems are clear, and awareness messages are being shared widely.

A key safety reminder: don’t drive through flooded roads or underpasses, no matter how shallow they look.
