Pakistan Idol returns after 11 years with star-studded judges panel

After more than a decade, the much-loved music reality show Pakistan Idol is set to return — this time with a star-studded panel of judges featuring Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, former Strings member Bilal Maqsood, singer Zeb Bangash, and actor Fawad Khan.

An adaptation of the British hit Pop Idol, the Pakistani version first aired in 2014 on Geo TV, attracting nationwide attention and thousands of aspiring singers. The original judging panel included Junoon’s Ali Azmat, veteran actor Bushra Ansari, and renowned vocalist Hadiqa Kiani. Zamad Baig from Lahore emerged as the winner of that inaugural season.

For many contestants, the show became a career-defining moment. Season One participant Waqas Ali Vicky recalled, “It advertises you. You are musically groomed when you go to this show.” Rose Marie, another finalist, described Pakistan Idol as “a stage where the whole country can see you and appreciate you,” adding that the experience gave artists a much-needed boost in their careers.

Contestants say the show offered more than just exposure — it was a crash course in professionalism and artistry. “We were all raw talent,” said Vicky. “We learned how to dress, perform, and explore different genres by learning from each other.” The platform also fostered industry connections, with Rose Marie noting that contacts from the show led to work on drama OSTs, film songs, and commercials.

For many young singers without industry backgrounds, Pakistan Idol provided a sense of belonging. “Your name gets attached to this platform and people start following you globally,” Vicky explained. “It’s a great chance for gully boys who want to make music on an international level.”

Zoya Merchant, director at MHL Global — the company streaming the show across five TV networks — told Variety that Pakistan’s musical talent is “incredible” and that this platform will “not only spotlight it nationwide but elevate it to the global stage.”

The revived Pakistan Idol is set to launch online auditions and casting calls soon, with the premiere date expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
