Pakistan launches first-ever ferry service to UAE and Iran, opening new travel routes

In a landmark move to boost regional connectivity and sea-based travel, Pakistan has approved its first-ever international ferry service, connecting major ports to Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs granted a ferry license to Sea Keepers, an international ferry operator, marking the beginning of a new era in affordable and accessible sea travel for Pakistanis.

The approval came after a high-level meeting of the Licensing Committee, which included representatives from the Ministries of Maritime Affairs, Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Interior, as well as officials from the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation and Port & Shipping departments.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry hailed the decision as a historic step forward, aligning with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s National Maritime Policy.

“This ferry service will help promote regional connectivity, facilitate religious tourism, and create affordable travel options for Pakistani citizens,” said the minister.

The ferry will primarily benefit:

Pilgrims traveling to Iran and Iraq

Workers and tourists heading to GCC states

Overseas Pakistanis seeking affordable alternatives to expensive air travel

⚓ Initial Operations from Karachi and Gwadar
Operations will start from the ports of Karachi and Gwadar, using modern ferry vessels equipped with essential onboard amenities. Routes will later expand based on demand and bilateral agreements with neighboring countries.

“This will also reduce pressure on road and air travel while promoting the blue economy,” added the minister.

The initiative is part of Pakistan’s strategic vision to enhance maritime infrastructure, develop its blue economy, and foster sustainable, sea-based tourism and trade logistics.
