Pakistan has officially announced its withdrawal from the Hockey Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to take place in Rajgir, Bihar from August 27 to September 7.
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) cited security concerns as the main reason for the decision, stressing that the well-being and dignity of its players must come before participation in international tournaments.
While Indian authorities had expressed willingness to facilitate visas for the Pakistani squad, PHF officials highlighted that broader political realities and safety considerations made the team’s participation untenable. “We cannot compromise on our players’ welfare,” a federation representative said.
The withdrawal means Pakistan will miss one of Asia’s most prominent hockey tournaments, but PHF clarified that the move was not a retreat. Instead, it is intended as a firm message for neutral and fair sporting platforms where athletes can compete without doubts or distractions.
Bangladesh has been drafted in to replace Pakistan, ensuring that the eight-team competition remains intact. Meanwhile, Pakistan will focus on preparing for future global hockey events, prioritizing a secure and supportive environment for its athletes.
Observers believe the decision underscores how political tensions between India and Pakistan continue to spill over into the sporting arena, affecting not only cricket but also other disciplines like hockey.
