PM announces free electric bikes for top students as part of clean energy push

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has unveiled a landmark initiative to reward high-achieving students with free electric bikes, linking academic excellence with Pakistan’s broader clean energy agenda.

The decision was announced during a high-level meeting on Friday, where the prime minister emphasized that the scheme serves a dual purpose—recognizing talent and promoting eco-friendly transport.

“This program not only rewards hardworking students but also supports Pakistan’s transition toward greener, more affordable transportation,” Shehbaz Sharif stated.

Boosting clean mobility and youth empowerment
Under the new plan, the government will distribute over 100,000 electric bikes and 300,000 electric loaders nationwide. While top performers will receive electric bikes completely free of cost, other segments—particularly low-income groups—will have access to subsidized e-rickshaws and loaders, creating both employment opportunities and reduced reliance on imported fuel.

A parallel action plan will ensure easy financing and subsidized loans, making EVs more accessible to the general public.

Gender inclusion and fair provincial share
In a step toward inclusive development, the prime minister directed that 25% of the quota for electric vehicles be reserved for women, while allocations for provinces will be based on population ratios. To ensure equity, Balochistan’s share has been increased to 10%.

Building Pakistan’s EV ecosystem
The government is also moving to strengthen the local EV industry. Four new battery manufacturing companies are set to begin operations, which will help establish a domestic supply chain, reduce costs, and create new employment opportunities.

Transparency and public awareness
To guarantee transparency, the distribution process will be subject to third-party validation, and all EVs will have to meet strict safety and quality standards. Additionally, a nationwide awareness campaign will educate citizens on the scheme’s benefits and application process.

The meeting was attended by key ministers, including Ahad Khan Cheema and Attaullah Tarar, along with Special Assistant to the PM Haroon Akhtar, Chief Coordinator Mosharraf Zaidi, and senior federal officials.

This initiative highlights the government’s intent to integrate education, clean energy, and youth empowerment, shaping a sustainable and inclusive future for Pakistan.
