The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning for a wet and stormy week ahead, predicting widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential flooding across the upper and central regions of the country.
According to the PMD’s National Weather Forecasting Centre, weak monsoon currents currently affecting parts of Pakistan are expected to intensify from Monday (today), while a strengthening westerly wave is likely to hit by Tuesday (tomorrow).
As a result, rain-wind and thundershowers with isolated heavy falls are expected in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), Punjab, and Islamabad through Thursday.
The forecast includes:
AJK: Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, and Mirpur.
Gilgit-Baltistan (Aug 5–7): Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (Aug 4–7): Including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Peshawar, D.I. Khan, and others.
Punjab (Aug 4–7): From Islamabad/Rawalpindi and Murree to Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, and south Punjab cities like Multan, Layyah, and DG Khan.
Meanwhile, hot and humid weather is likely to persist across most of Balochistan, though scattered showers are expected in parts of northeastern and southern Balochistan including Zhob, Sibbi, Barkhan, and Khuzdar on Wednesday (Aug 6).
The PMD has warned of flash flooding in local nullahs across northern K-P, Rawalpindi, Galliyat, and northeast Punjab. Urban flooding is also possible in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Sialkot.
Additionally, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), landslides, and flash floods remain a major concern in vulnerable glaciated zones of Gilgit-Baltistan and AJK.
Authorities and residents are advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines amid this active monsoon spell.
