Islamabad: As the July 21 Senate elections draw near, political maneuvering is in full swing. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) held talks on Friday to explore potential seat adjustments, particularly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
A PPP delegation led by KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi met JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his residence. The PPP side also included senior leaders Syed Khursheed Shah and Zahir Shah. Representing JUI-F were Akram Khan Durrani, Maulana Lutfur Rehman, Maulana Asad Mahmood, Zahid Durrani, and Asjad Mahmood.
According to a brief statement from the JUI-F spokesperson, the meeting focused on coordination and possible cooperation for the Senate elections in KP. Notably, Maulana Asad Mahmood had also met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier this week, followed by a separate PML-N delegation led by Rana Sanaullah calling on Fazlur Rehman—signaling increased political activity behind the scenes.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Faisal Karim Kundi said the dialogue was part of broader efforts to build consensus among opposition parties. He stressed that PPP has always pushed for transparent elections and had taken measures in the past to counter horse-trading. Kundi also pointed out the ever-shifting nature of political alliances, reminding reporters of past interactions between PTI and JUI-F.
As Senate elections approach, such consultations may prove pivotal in shaping the outcome, particularly in tightly contested provinces like KP.
