Punjab adopts zero-tolerance policy against illegal hunting of falcons and quails

The Punjab Wildlife Department has announced a strict zero-tolerance policy against the illegal hunting of falcons and quails, aiming to protect these vulnerable bird species from extinction.

Under the leadership of Secretary Forests Mudassir Riaz Malik, newly trained Wildlife Rangers will be deployed across the province to curb unauthorized hunting. The strategy was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Wildlife Ranger Mubeen Elahi at the Lahore Zoo on Wednesday.

Officials raised alarms over the sharp decline in falcon and quail populations, attributing it to unchecked hunting. Moving forward, immediate FIRs (First Information Reports) will be registered against individuals involved in illegal hunting. Landowners who allow such activities on their premises will also face strict legal consequences.

“All field officers must remain vigilant, especially during the hunting season,” officials emphasized.

To strengthen implementation, all Deputy Chief Wildlife Rangers have been ordered to submit daily reports on violations and enforcement actions. They will also be held accountable for any complaints regarding falcon or quail trapping in their jurisdictions.

Special raid teams are being established region-wise to take swift action against illegal netting or poaching activities. The campaign also includes a public awareness drive, with synchronized messaging across electronic and social media platforms to highlight the ecological dangers of illegal bird hunting.

Deputy and Assistant Chief Wildlife Rangers, along with senior officers, attended the session via video link to discuss coordinated efforts.

The department announced performance-based incentives for officers who demonstrate outstanding efforts in protecting wildlife during this season.

While the policy shows the department’s strong commitment to conservation, officials stress that success relies on public cooperation, awareness, and strict enforcement of wildlife laws.
