Punjab approves major underpasses and flyover projects to ease traffic in Rawalpindi and Mandi Bahauddin

In a move set to improve traffic flow and road safety, the Punjab government has approved several high-impact infrastructure projects for Rawalpindi and Mandi Bahauddin—worth over Rs7.4 billion combined.

The decision came during the second meeting of the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) for the fiscal year 2025–26, held on Friday. The session was chaired by Dr. Naeem Rauf, Chairman of the Planning and Development Board Punjab, and attended by key officials including Secretary Rafaqat Ali and Chief Economist Masood Anwar.

For Rawalpindi, the government has cleared the way for the construction of:

Two underpasses at GPO Chowk and TM Chowk (The Mall)

A pedestrian underpass near the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC)

These three projects alone will cost Rs5.552 billion and aim to relieve congestion in some of the city’s busiest areas, while also improving pedestrian safety.

Meanwhile, in Mandi Bahauddin, the PDWP approved the widening of the road from District Complex to Kakuwal Bridge along the Gujrat Branch. A flyover is also part of this plan to improve connectivity and reduce bottlenecks. This development is expected to cost Rs1.864 billion.

These efforts are part of a larger development package of nine major schemes across various sectors, with a total investment exceeding Rs52.3 billion—signaling Punjab’s commitment to improving infrastructure, mobility, and public convenience.
