Lahore – The Punjab government has unveiled the payment structure for its landmark electric taxi project, bringing Pakistan closer to modern and eco-friendly urban transport.
In the first phase, 1,100 electric taxis will be introduced in Lahore. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a financing package that allows banks to extend loans of up to Rs. 6.5 million per vehicle. The government will cover the interest, while buyers will pay a subsidized down payment.
For EVs priced between Rs. 4 million and Rs. 10 million, the Punjab government will contribute Rs. 585,000 towards the down payment, with banks covering the remainder through financing.
With Rs. 2 billion allocated for the scheme, officials confirmed that 1,100 Chinese EVs will be deployed initially. The province has also established 18 charging stations across Lahore, with more planned to expand coverage.
The electric taxi service is expected to make transportation cheaper, cut fuel dependency, reduce emissions, and bring Lahore closer to global green mobility standards.
