LAHORE – The Punjab government has approved the launch of an interest-free electric taxi scheme, aimed at creating jobs and promoting eco-friendly public transport.
Under the first phase of the Punjab E-Taxi Scheme, 1,100 electric vehicles will be provided on easy, interest-free installments. The initiative is part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s E-Taxi Program 2025, which seeks to gradually replace traditional fuel-based taxis with zero-emission alternatives.
Locally assembled EVs, strong charging network
Punjab has partnered with Dewan Motors to supply locally assembled EV models such as the Honri VC20 and VC30, offering driving ranges of 200 km and 300 km per charge.
To support these vehicles, a robust charging infrastructure is being developed. In Lahore, charging stations will be installed every 3 kilometers, with plans to expand the network across Punjab.
Job creation and inclusivity
The scheme is designed to empower unemployed youth, making it easier for them to own and operate eco-friendly taxis. Special quotas will be allocated for women, disabled individuals, and residents of rural areas to ensure inclusivity.
Affordable and accessible
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan chaired a high-level meeting to finalize vehicle pricing, installment plans, and application procedures. He confirmed the project would be officially launched in the coming weeks with a simple and transparent application process advertised publicly.
This scheme not only promotes clean mobility but also supports job creation and reduces the province’s dependence on fossil fuels, aligning with Punjab’s broader green transport goals.
