Shehbaz and Pezeshkian urge calm as Iran-Israel ceasefire takes effect

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a telephone call on Tuesday, discussing the tense situation in the Middle East and reaffirming their shared commitment to resolving regional conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Shehbaz expressed Pakistan’s deep concern over the recent escalation and emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate tensions in the region. He underscored the importance of international law and the principles of the UN Charter, reaffirming Pakistan’s support for Iran at global forums including the United Nations Security Council and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

President Pezeshkian welcomed Shehbaz Sharif’s support and acknowledged Pakistan’s role in promoting peace and preventing further conflict. Both leaders agreed to continue coordination on regional matters and emphasized unity among Muslim nations in facing shared challenges.

Separately, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed strong support for the recently announced Iran-Israel ceasefire. In a post on X, he said, “Pakistan warmly welcomes today’s ceasefire between Iran and Israel. We commend those who facilitated this development and hope it leads to lasting peace and stability.”

Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s belief in resolving disputes peacefully, based on respect for sovereignty and international law.

The ceasefire, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, followed days of deadly clashes between the two regional rivals. While both sides have accused each other of violating the agreement, the truce has been generally welcomed by the international community, including Russia, France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia.

The 12-day conflict claimed over 974 lives in Iran and 24 in Israel, with thousands more injured, according to the Human Rights Activists group based in Washington.
