Tourists Rescued from Babusar Road as GB Faces More Flood Risks

ISLAMABAD – In a major relief effort, all 250 tourists stranded on Babusar Road have been rescued and shifted to Chilas, while a search operation continues to locate those still missing after devastating flash floods hit Gilgit-Baltistan.

GB government spokesperson Faizullah Firaq confirmed that Silk Road and Babusar Road remain closed due to landslides and flooding. Tourists trapped on Deosai plains were also safely evacuated.

Flash floods triggered by torrential rains in Diamer district earlier this week killed five people, including four tourists, and left at least 15 others missing. A cloudburst at Babusar Top – a popular tourist site – left many visitors injured and stranded.

Authorities have advised tourists to avoid travelling to GB, with Naran and Kaghan fully closed, while only small vehicles are allowed on certain sections of the Silk Route. Local hotels and the government have arranged free accommodation for affected travellers.

The Karakoram Highway has again been blocked at two points, stranding thousands of travellers. Restoration work is underway to reopen the Silk Road up to Bisham. Chief Minister GB Haji Gulbar Khan will visit Babusar Road today to assess the damage.

Meanwhile, the NDMA warned of more monsoon rains till July 25, predicting flooding, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods in northern areas. Rivers including Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Kabul, Swat, Hunza, and Shigar may face rising water levels.

Local administrations have been told to stay on high alert, keep dewatering pumps ready, and ensure machinery is in place for rapid emergency response. Tourists are strongly advised to avoid mountainous regions until July 25.
