KARACHI – WaterAid Pakistan, in collaboration with the PepsiCo Foundation, has successfully wrapped up its three-year Urban Water Initiative, marking a major milestone in improving access to clean drinking water and hygiene services in Pakistan’s underserved cities.
Launched in 2022, the initiative provided safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene awareness in vulnerable communities, schools, and healthcare facilities across Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta, directly benefiting tens of thousands of people.
Transforming Urban WASH Services
Through the project, water filtration systems were installed, hygiene promotion campaigns were conducted, and local Water User Committees were established to ensure long-term sustainability.
Sindh’s Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah emphasized that access to clean water and sanitation is a basic human right, essential for dignity, health, and education.
“Every child deserves clean water and safe sanitation. Government, civil society, and citizens must work together to build climate-resilient and inclusive WASH systems,” he said.
A Collaboration of Communities, Government & Private Sector
WaterAid Pakistan’s Country Director Mian Muhammad Junaid praised the initiative as a model of community engagement and private sector partnership, highlighting that it not only built infrastructure but empowered people to manage and sustain essential services.
Hatim Khan, Senior Director at the PepsiCo Foundation, reaffirmed the Foundation’s global commitment to expanding access to safe water in water-stressed regions, noting that sustainable, community-led solutions are key to long-term success.
Sharing Lessons for the Future
A panel discussion on “Learning Together for Sustainable WASH” featured experts from PepsiCo Pakistan, IDEA, DevCon, Taraqee Foundation, and Mojaz Foundation, exploring lessons in sustainability, inclusive design, and scale-up strategies.
