Widespread rainfall offers relief from heatwave, PMD warns of urban flooding and landslides

ISLAMABAD – Widespread rainfall across various regions of Pakistan has brought much-needed respite from the relentless summer heat. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast further showers and thunderstorms over the next two days, while also issuing warnings for potential urban flooding and landslides.

In the past 24 hours, heavy rain and thunderstorms were reported in several areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Kashmir, and northeastern Balochistan. Some of the highest recorded rainfall (in millimeters) included Kasur (71), Okara (67), Sheikhupura (54), Joharabad (49), and Sargodha City (45). Other significant readings were reported in Multan Airport (43), Bahawalnagar (37), Islamabad (35), and Lahore Airport (34).

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Malam Jabba topped the charts with 69 mm of rain, followed by Parachinar (23) and Charat (15). Meanwhile, Kashmir received up to 11 mm in Rawalakot, while Balochistan’s Barkhan recorded 2 mm.

Despite the rainfall, heat persisted in some regions. Dalbandin, Sibbi, and Jacobabad recorded the highest temperatures at 46°C, with Nokundi, Rohri, and Mohenjo-Daro reaching 45°C.

The PMD has predicted that rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms will continue in various parts of Sindh, Punjab, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan. Isolated areas may witness heavy showers, particularly at night.

Between June 26 and 28, the department has warned of flash floods in seasonal streams and nullahs in areas such as Murree, Galliyat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Dir, Swat, Shangla, and Nowshera. Urban flooding is likely in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and parts of southern Sindh including Sukkur, Hyderabad, and Karachi.

Strong winds may also damage fragile structures, electric poles, solar panels, and parked vehicles. Additionally, landslides in mountainous regions such as Murree, Galliyat, and parts of Kashmir could disrupt road access.
