200-unit trap: Govt may revise six-month inflated electricity billing after public outrage

ISLAMABAD: After mounting public complaints, the Energy Division has admitted that charging higher electricity bills for six months after a consumer crosses the 200-unit limit is unfair and may be reviewed.

During the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) session chaired by Junaid Akbar, officials confirmed that the number of 200-unit consumers jumped from 11 million to 18 million. They hinted at phasing out this system by 2027 but said increasing the limit to 250 units would mean more subsidies.

PAC member Shazia Marri slammed the government, saying people still face 16-hour power outages despite promises of reforms. She criticized the 18% solar tax that was only reduced after protests, adding that Pakistan’s own gas and Thar coal reserves remain ignored due to “powerful mafias blocking progress.”

The revelation sparked further frustration among citizens who already face crippling electricity bills, chronic load-shedding, and rising energy taxes amid an economic crunch.
