PTA launches tax-free mobile registration for overseas Pakistanis and visitors

In a welcome move for overseas Pakistanis and foreign visitors, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a new facility that allows them to use their personal mobile phones in Pakistan without paying any FBR tax—for up to 120 days per visit.

The initiative is designed to ease the experience of those who return home for vacations, family events, or short business trips. Instead of facing steep import taxes or dealing with sudden service cut-offs, travelers can now register their devices easily and free of cost through an automated digital system.

This hassle-free process ensures that guests can stay connected with loved ones, access essential services like banking and navigation, and enjoy uninterrupted mobile service throughout their stay.

According to PTA, the tax exemption applies strictly to personal use and begins from the day of arrival in Pakistan. The system is simple to use, requiring just a few steps online to activate the 120-day grace period.

Officials believe this move not only reduces financial pressure on visitors but also modernizes and simplifies the entire device registration experience. It’s a win-win for overseas Pakistanis who’ve long struggled with confusing processes and unexpected charges when using their own phones during short stays.

The step is part of PTA’s broader mission to improve digital access, convenience, and inclusivity for all users—especially those temporarily in the country.
