Monsoon rains kill seven in Karachi as city battles flooding and power outages

KARACHI – Torrential monsoon rains wreaked havoc in Karachi on Tuesday, leaving at least seven people dead as urban flooding paralyzed traffic, disrupted power, and forced authorities to impose a rain emergency across the city.

Heavy showers with strong winds lashed several areas, including Surjani Town, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Malir, Nazimabad, and Federal B Area. Flooding was particularly severe in Gulshan-e-Hadeed, where rainwater entered homes, forcing residents to move their belongings to safer places. Major intersections such as Hassan Square, Nipa Chowrangi, Korangi and Malir Expressway were also submerged.

Rescue officials reported multiple casualties. A wall collapse in Orangi Town killed an eight-year-old boy, while four members of a family lost their lives in Gulistan-e-Jauhar after their house wall caved in.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Saadi Town received the heaviest rainfall at 176 mm, followed by Nazimabad at 175.6 mm, Gulshan-e-Hadeed at 173 mm, and Jinnah Terminal at 152.8 mm.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab declared a rain emergency, putting all municipal teams on high alert. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also directed all departments to stay mobilized, monitor drains, and assist citizens. Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon urged the public to remain indoors, stressing that safety was the government’s top priority.

The PMD has forecast more downpours in the coming hours, warning residents—particularly in low-lying areas—to stay cautious.
