Pakistan, Iran vow joint fight against terrorism and stronger border security

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and Iran have reaffirmed their commitment to jointly combat terrorism and tighten security along their shared border.

The understanding came during a phone conversation between Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi. According to Iran’s embassy in Islamabad, both sides agreed to enhance cooperation against threats along the frontier.

Iranian state news agency IRNA quoted General Mousavi as saying that Tehran was ready to work with Islamabad “to eradicate terrorism and secure the common border.” He also expressed solidarity with Pakistan’s flood-affected population, offering Iran’s support “within its power to dear brothers in Pakistan.”

The Iranian commander further praised Pakistan’s backing during Tehran’s recent 12-day conflict with Israel, highlighting the depth of bilateral cooperation.

This renewed security cooperation follows Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s two-day official visit to Pakistan earlier this month. During the visit, Pakistan and Iran signed 12 agreements and MoUs covering areas such as plant protection, maritime safety, judicial cooperation, ICT, tourism, and culture.

At a joint press conference, President Pezeshkian and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underlined that terrorism could not be tolerated “at any cost” and agreed to enhance border security for the protection of citizens on both sides. President Asif Ali Zardari also stressed that peace in border regions depended on eliminating terrorism.

The latest military-level talks reaffirm that counterterrorism will remain a cornerstone of Islamabad-Tehran ties going forward.
