Federal Cabinet reviews rightsizing proposals to save Rs 42.1 billion

ISLAMABAD: A federal cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, was held today at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad to review the government’s rightsizing agenda aimed at streamlining ministries and affiliated departments.

The committee overseeing the initiative presented its recommendations for the restructuring of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Housing and Works, and the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, along with their subordinate bodies. The proposals included the closure of underperforming or non-essential organizations, the consolidation of certain entities to eliminate overlaps in functions, and a 30% reduction in secretariat-level staffing to optimize workforce efficiency.

The cabinet was informed that the implementation of these measures could lead to estimated savings of PKR 42.1 billion, providing significant relief to the national exchequer. Cabinet members shared their feedback on the recommendations and highlighted areas requiring further scrutiny.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of a comprehensive evaluation of the proposals and directed the committee to revise its recommendations based on input from the cabinet members. A detailed report is to be presented for final review in a subsequent cabinet meeting.
