HBL freezes 2,000 accounts in Islamabad, customers left cash-strapped

HBL customers face account suspensions without prior notice, anger mounts in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Thousands of Habib Bank Limited (HBL) customers in the capital city are reeling under unexpected financial stress after the bank reportedly suspended or restricted transactions on nearly 2,000 accounts without prior intimation.

Account holders have complained that for over two weeks, they have been unable to withdraw funds, make transfers, or carry out basic transactions, even though their accounts continue to receive credits. “It is shocking that our salaries are being deposited, but we cannot withdraw even a single rupee to feed our families or pay school fees,” said one frustrated customer outside an HBL branch in Islamabad.

According to bank insiders, the unprecedented step was initiated following an internal audit of HBL accounts. Customers, however, allege that no advance notice was given through calls, SMS, emails, or letters, which they say is against standard banking norms and practices.

Adding to the frustration, customers have been informed that they will need to visit branches, submit additional documents and information, and then wait another two weeks for restoration of their accounts. “This is harassment in the name of compliance. Why punish genuine account holders?” asked another angry customer.

The situation has been further aggravated by what customers describe as a “pathetic system” and “unfriendly behavior” of branch staff. Multiple account holders rushing to HBL branches in Islamabad were seen visibly irritated and voicing their anger at the “unwanted and arbitrary” restrictions.

The incident has sparked calls for regulatory intervention. Customers are urging the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to immediately step in and direct HBL to restore access to frozen accounts. “Thousands of people are in mental stress. We cannot afford such surprises when it comes to our hard-earned money,” a group of customers demanded.

So far, HBL has not issued a public clarification on the matter.
