ISLAMABAD – July 25, 2025: Electricity bills are set to become significantly more expensive starting next month, as multiple relief measures introduced under the Prime Minister’s affordable electricity package are coming to an end, sources confirmed to ProPakistani.
The Rs. 1.55 per unit relief under the third quarter adjustment of the last financial year will expire this month. Earlier, a Rs. 4.51 per unit relief—which included a Rs. 3.61 per unit reduction for Karachi consumers— had already lapsed.
In June, other concessions were withdrawn, including a Rs. 1.90 per unit relief under the second quarter adjustment and a Rs. 1.71 per unit cut in the petroleum levy.
Meanwhile, the 90-paisa per unit Retained Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) relief, which applied to DISCO consumers, has also ended.
Currently, a partial relief on quarterly adjustments and the petroleum levy is still in place, but many of these subsidies are phasing out completely by next month.
Earlier this year, on April 3, the Prime Minister announced a Rs. 7.41 per unit reduction in electricity rates for domestic users. As of now, the federal government has only managed to cut the base tariff by Rs. 1.16 per unit and reduce the monthly adjustment for DISCO consumers by 50 paisa per unit, but this support is temporary.
The removal of these relief measures is expected to put additional financial pressure on households and businesses already struggling with high living costs.
