Pakistan Air Force unveils “Al-Murtajiz” drone concept for next-generation warfare

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) unveiled a new drone concept named “Al-Murtajiz” during Independence Day celebrations on August 14, highlighting its push toward next-generation unmanned combat systems.

Although officials shared no technical specifications, PAF personnel described Al-Murtajiz as a ground-launched drone capable of performing multiple roles, including intercepting subsonic cruise missiles and executing kamikaze strike missions. The model was later removed from public display.

The showcased prototype appeared to feature a miniature turbojet engine, foldable narrow wings, and a low-observable airframe, suggesting stealth-oriented design features. Defense analysts believe the project aligns with the PAF’s ambitions to build manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) capabilities, a doctrine where drones complement crewed aircraft in high-risk missions.

The PAF has already signaled its intent to expand its unmanned aerial systems (UAS) fleet to include jet-powered unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). This strategy is seen as a cost-effective alternative to investing exclusively in next-generation fighter jets.

PAF’s semi-official magazine Second to None outlines a future vision where crewed fighters act as command nodes for UCAVs in integrated missions, including air-to-air combat, stealth operations, and electronic warfare. Analysts say this approach mirrors strategies being adopted by China, Pakistan’s key defense partner.

While it remains uncertain whether Al-Murtajiz will progress beyond the prototype stage, its unveiling demonstrates the PAF’s determination to develop versatile multipurpose drones for decoy, loitering munition, and electronic countermeasure roles.
