Khunjerab Border goes all-weather: Pakistan and China break seasonal barrier for the first time

Historic move to keep border open year-round marks a new era in CPEC and regional trade

GILGIT: In a groundbreaking move that redefines regional trade and connectivity, Pakistan and China have, for the first time, agreed to keep the Khunjerab Border open year-round — transforming the high-altitude pass into a true all-weather trade gateway under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The historic decision was officially announced during a high-level virtual inauguration ceremony on Monday, attended by Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan Haji Gulbar Khan and senior Chinese officials from the Xinjiang region, including representatives from Kashgar.

For decades, the Khunjerab Pass — situated at over 15,000 feet — would shut down during winter due to snow and harsh weather. Now, with upgraded infrastructure and renewed political will, the border will remain operational 12 months a year, signaling a strategic shift in Pakistan-China cooperation.

“This is not just a border — it is a bridge of opportunity, prosperity, and enduring friendship,” said Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan.
“Today is a milestone not only for Gilgit-Baltistan, but for all of Pakistan. The all-weather opening will unleash new economic potential, freeing trade from the grip of seasons.”

The initiative is being hailed as a powerful symbol of the evolving CPEC vision, breathing new life into the economic corridor that links Gwadar to Western China. According to officials, the uninterrupted operation of the Khunjerab Border will enhance bilateral trade, improve customs clearance efficiency, and benefit thousands of traders on both sides.

During the virtual session, Chinese authorities shared a comprehensive documentary outlining their updated customs procedures. Officials from Kashgar and Gilgit-Baltistan then presented detailed briefings on synchronized border operations, designed to ensure smooth trade flows year-round.

Governor of Xinjiang, in his remarks, praised the enduring Pak-China friendship and called the step a “gateway to a new chapter of regional peace and shared development.”

“This is more than an infrastructure milestone. It reflects our shared vision for prosperity and connectivity,” he said.

This is the first time in history that both countries have committed to keeping this strategic corridor open regardless of weather — a move that experts say could significantly boost cross-border trade, tourism, and economic integration.

As officials on both sides celebrated the new arrangement, the message was clear: this isn’t just a policy shift — it’s a bold leap forward in regional connectivity, making the mountains between Pakistan and China not a barrier, but a bridge.
