Pakistan calls for urgent climate finance at high-level UN consultation in Geneva

GENEVA: Dr. Musadiq Malik, Federal Minister for Climate Change, represented Pakistan at the High-Level Consultation titled “Unlocking Capital for Development in High-Risk, Neglected Markets”, organized by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). The session took place on the sidelines of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions in Geneva.

During the consultation, Dr. Malik emphasized Pakistan’s pressing need for enhanced climate financing mechanisms, particularly for developing and climate-vulnerable nations bearing the brunt of climate-induced disasters. He outlined Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to implement climate-resilient development strategies and reiterated the country’s commitment to green transition, environmental sustainability, and nature-based solutions.

“Pakistan is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries despite contributing less than 1% to global greenhouse gas emissions,” the Minister said. “Unlocking climate finance for high-risk and neglected markets is critical if we are to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and protect vulnerable communities.”

He urged international financial institutions and development partners to ease access to climate finance, invest in climate adaptation technologies, and support capacity-building initiatives across the Global South.

Dr. Malik reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), including ambitious targets for renewable energy expansion, afforestation, and sustainable water management.

The event brought together key stakeholders from the UN system, development finance institutions, and ministers from other climate-vulnerable countries to develop actionable frameworks for mobilizing public and private capital toward climate-resilient development.
