ISLAMABAD — In a crucial meeting chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, the Sugar Advisory Board gave the green light to import 500,000 tonnes of sugar to tackle the country’s supply shortfall and bring prices under control.
Minister Hussain said all formalities to import sugar will be wrapped up within a few days so that the shipments can reach markets without delay.
He stressed that this decision was unavoidable given the shrinking sugar stocks and soaring prices across the country. “We are facing a short supply of sugar nationwide, and importing additional sugar has become necessary to stabilise prices and ensure relief for the public,” he said.
He pointed out that arbitrary price hikes by some sugar mill owners were a major reason behind the sudden surge in market rates.
The minister assured that immediate steps are being taken to address the shortage, and strict monitoring measures will be enforced to keep a check on supply and prices.
“We are determined to bring imported sugar into the market as quickly as possible so consumers don’t have to bear the brunt of high prices any longer,” he added.
