LAHORE – The price of broiler chicken has shot up by Rs. 30 per kilogram, sparking frustration among consumers already struggling with inflation.
Although the government has fixed the official retail price at Rs. 577/kg, chicken is currently being sold in the market at rates between Rs. 595 and Rs. 610/kg — well above the approved price.
Despite price regulations, shopkeepers across various markets appear to be ignoring the government’s directives. A spot check revealed that no vendor is following the official rate, with most charging Rs. 20 to Rs. 30 extra per kilo.
The unregulated increase is further tightening household budgets, especially for lower and middle-income families that rely on chicken as a primary protein source.
Local authorities have yet to take strict action, and consumers continue to voice concerns over the lack of enforcement and unchecked profiteering.
