ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has generated Rs. 46.73 billion by selling scrap from 61 defunct thermal power plants, according to a report by the Power Division.
The scrap auction was conducted in two phases, surpassing the reserve price of Rs. 45.817 billion, which had been set in consultation with the State Bank of Pakistan.
Phase 1: 31 power plant units sold for Rs. 8.475 billion
Phase 2: 30 more units sold for Rs. 38.255 billion
The non-operational plants, located in Jamshoro, Guddu, Sukkur, and other cities, had been a financial burden due to capacity payments—charges paid even when no electricity was generated.
To protect workers’ livelihoods, the government confirmed that staff from these closed plants will be transferred to power distribution companies, ensuring no job losses.
Officials say this is a major step in energy sector reforms, aimed at reducing financial losses, improving efficiency, and relieving consumers from unnecessary costs.
