Pakistan, China to expand electric vehicle cooperation as Ahsan Iqbal eyes joint manufacturing

Pakistan and China are set to deepen collaboration in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, with Federal Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal calling for joint ventures and investments in EV manufacturing, advanced batteries, and clean transport infrastructure.

Addressing a press conference at the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing, Iqbal identified electric vehicles as a priority area of bilateral cooperation, citing Pakistan’s commitment to clean energy and technological progress.

“EVs have become a very important segment,” he stated, emphasizing that Pakistan wants to benefit from China’s leadership in battery technologies—especially next-generation options like sodium-ion batteries, which offer significant advantages over lithium-based systems.

Iqbal announced that the upcoming Pakistan-China Business Conference on September 4 in China will provide a key platform to match industry players from both nations.

“We are expecting over 250 Pakistani companies and more than 200 Chinese companies,” he said. “The matchmaking will focus on sectors like electric vehicles, solar energy, chemicals, and agriculture.”

He said EV manufacturing in Pakistan offers major cost advantages for Chinese firms and can help reduce Pakistan’s fossil fuel dependency. Localized EV production, he added, would create jobs and support the country’s long-term sustainability goals.

📈 National EV Policy Gains Momentum
Pakistan’s newly launched National Electric Vehicle Policy (2025–2030) aims to make 30% of all new vehicle sales electric by 2030, and achieve net-zero transport emissions by 2060.

To support this transition, the government has introduced generous incentives:

Tax breaks and duty exemptions

Infrastructure support for EV charging

Subsidies for local manufacturing

Emphasis on localization and export potential

Several Chinese companies including BYD, Chery, and others have already shown interest in assembling EVs, expanding charging infrastructure, and making Pakistan a regional EV hub.

Ahsan Iqbal stressed that such partnerships represent more than just business—they are part of a strategic vision for a cleaner, more resilient economy rooted in innovation and sustainability.
