The federal government is reviewing a proposal to raise the protected electricity consumption limit from 200 to 300 units, a move that could provide significant relief to domestic consumers.
The suggestion emerged after lawmakers informed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that households using just one unit above the 200-unit mark were being charged an extra Rs. 5,000, calling the current system unfair.
If the proposal is approved, the higher tariff would apply only to those consuming more than 300 units, potentially sparing many low and middle-income families from steep electricity bills.
A high-level committee will now assess the existing protected and non-protected categories and present recommendations for the revised limit.
The proposal comes amid rising public concern over soaring power costs and the financial strain on households already burdened by inflation.
