Flood destroys key section of Karakoram Highway in Upper Hunza, cutting Pakistan-China road link

UPPER HUNZA — A vital section of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Morkhun area has been washed away by river erosion, cutting off the only land route between Pakistan and China, the G-B government confirmed on Friday.

The disaster was triggered by a surge in river water levels caused by accelerated glacial melting due to rising regional temperatures. The increased flow has also led to localised flooding in several parts of G-B, threatening infrastructure and public safety.

G-B government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said the highway damage has left the route inaccessible. Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan has ordered immediate restoration, and emergency repair teams have been sent to the site.

The KKH is a lifeline for trade and travel between Pakistan and China, making its disruption a major economic and logistical setback.

Meanwhile, in Skardu, rescue teams are still searching for tourists missing after a boat capsized in Zhouq Kachura Lake. Authorities believe high water levels from glacial runoff may have contributed to the accident.

Section 144 has been imposed to ban boating in lakes across the affected areas, with authorities warning of strict action against violators. “We are taking action against individuals and tour operators who endanger lives,” Faraq said.

Gilgit-Baltistan has been facing a series of climate-related disasters this year, including floods from cloudbursts, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and heavy monsoon rains. With the monsoon season ongoing and temperatures still rising, officials warn of more disruptions ahead, urging residents and tourists to follow safety advisories.
