Lahore turns slaughterhouse waste into affordable biogas under new LWMC project

Lahore is taking a major step toward sustainable energy by converting slaughterhouse waste into biogas through a new initiative by the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC).

Instead of sending thousands of tonnes of animal remains to landfills every day, the LWMC will process offal, intestines, and dung into renewable energy under its Waste to Value Project. The trial phase has already delivered 25,000 kilograms of biogas per day.

According to LWMC spokesperson Omar Chaudhry, the project aims to process 1,000 tonnes of waste daily, potentially generating 275,000 tonnes in carbon credits and $4.2 million in annual revenue. The facility, established at a cost of Rs. 3 million, will operate using anaerobic digesters to produce clean energy and reduce landfill use.

Beyond energy production, the plant will create a nutrient-rich byproduct that can be used as an organic fertilizer for landscaping and home gardening. Officials say the model could be expanded to other districts under the Suthra Punjab campaign.
