PTA grants reprieve: VPN users get more time to comply

ISLAMABAD: In a significant development, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has announced an extension to the registration deadline for virtual private networks (VPNs), easing concerns of internet users across the country. While no new deadline has been specified, the move reflects a bid to balance cybersecurity priorities with public convenience.

PTA Chairman Major General (Retired) Hafeezul Rehman, speaking to media on Saturday, confirmed the extension, clarifying that the decision was approved by the government. “VPNs will not be blocked today,” he stated, emphasizing that the interior ministry will determine the new timeline.

VPNs, which allow users to bypass internet restrictions, have gained prominence in Pakistan, particularly since the ban on X (formerly Twitter) in February and restrictions on other websites. However, the PTA has tightened its stance on unregistered VPNs, citing their potential misuse for accessing prohibited content and facilitating illegal activities.

Earlier this month, a disruption rendered many VPNs non-functional, coinciding with the PTA’s declaration to restrict VPN usage to curb access to pornographic and blasphemous material. On November 15, the interior ministry reinforced this stance, directing the PTA to block “illegal VPNs” across the country due to security concerns.

The Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (Wispap) had also appealed for an extension, highlighting the need for public awareness campaigns to educate users about the importance of VPN registration. The association argued that additional time would ensure smoother compliance while acknowledging the government’s efforts to enhance cybersecurity.

Despite the extended deadline, the PTA’s regulatory measures underscore a broader strategy to control digital access within the country while addressing global cybersecurity challenges. For now, VPN users can breathe a sigh of relief as they await further updates from the government.
