KARACHI – Zong, Pakistan’s leading data network, in partnership with ZTE Corporation, has commercially launched the industry’s first 8T8R Ultra-Broadband Radio (HP 8T8R UBR) and Digital Intelligent Antenna (DIA) solution, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s telecommunications sector.
The HP 8T8R UBR delivers 8x120W high power on FDD dual bands (1800MHz and 2100MHz), key frequencies for Zong’s network, and is the first such solution launched commercially worldwide. Its high integration design allows a single unit to replace multiple legacy RRUs, saving up to 67% of RRUs per tower, reducing deployment complexity, minimizing antenna space requirements, and cutting the overall equipment footprint.
Paired with ZTE’s DIA antenna solution, the system supports software-defined beamforming, enabling either two 4T4R cells for current networks or one 8T8R cell for next-generation networks. For new site deployments, Zong and ZTE are testing a “422” configuration—one 4T4R cell plus two 2T2R cells per site—ideal for locations with space and power limitations.
Early results from Zong’s commercial launch reveal impressive performance gains: a 34% increase in daily capacity and 83% during peak hours, along with a 173% improvement in daily user experience and 115% during busy hours. The solution not only enhances performance but also simplifies deployment and offers a reliable alternative to traditional multi-radio setups.
Zong expressed plans to scale this solution across its network, citing operational efficiency, cost savings, and superior service quality.
This collaboration between Zong and ZTE highlights their shared commitment to advancing Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and setting new benchmarks for high-performance, efficient mobile networks in emerging markets. Both companies plan to continue exploring innovative solutions that empower users and support sustainable growth.
