Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue highlights shared vision for climate action and sustainability

Islamabad — The Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue: Lessons from Ethiopia’s Green Legacy was held at the COMSTECH Secretariat on August 18, 2025, marking a milestone in green diplomacy and South-South cooperation. The event was jointly organized by the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) and the Embassy of Ethiopia in Pakistan.

The session opened with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an, national anthems of both nations, and a video presentation showcasing Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, a campaign that has gained international recognition for mass tree plantation and reforestation.

In his welcome remarks, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General COMSTECH, stressed the importance of collaborative action to address climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation. Ethiopian Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula highlighted Ethiopia’s success in implementing large-scale sustainable practices through the Green Legacy program.

The dialogue was attended by H.E. Senator Yusuf Raza Gillani, Chairman Senate of Pakistan, as Chief Guest. He noted that Pakistan, despite contributing less than 1% to global carbon emissions, is among the most climate-affected nations, facing floods, glacial melting, and droughts. Gillani praised Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative as a global model, stressing that Pakistan and Ethiopia can jointly drive climate resilience through parliamentary exchanges, joint task forces, and research partnerships.

He further highlighted Pakistan’s leadership in global climate diplomacy, citing its role in championing the Loss and Damage Fund at COP27 and climate finance advocacy at COP29.

The event also featured the presentation of Green Legacy Awards, a symbolic tree plantation ceremony, and a panel discussion where experts explored sustainable policy frameworks and community engagement strategies.

The Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue concluded with a lively Q&A session and networking lunch, reinforcing the two nations’ shared commitment to environmental cooperation and building a greener future for generations to come.
