DG ISPR says army intensifies rescue operations in flood-hit areas

Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, along with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider and Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, briefed the media on Tuesday about the ongoing rescue and relief efforts in flood-affected regions of Pakistan.

Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif said that under the Chief of Army Staff’s directives, the Pakistan Army had stepped up operations in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, rescuing 6,903 stranded people and providing medical treatment through nine established relief camps. He added that eight army units were deployed in the province, while two battalions were operating in Buner, supported by Army Aviation for air rescue and supply drops.

Minister Attaullah Tarar said that, following the Prime Minister’s orders, relief operations had been accelerated through joint coordination between the NDMA, Pakistan Army, and provincial governments. So far, 25,000 people have been shifted to safer areas.

According to NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider, at least 670 people have lost their lives and 1,000 others have been injured due to heavy rains, floods, and landslides. He added that more casualties were confirmed as missing persons’ bodies were recovered. Forecasts suggest fresh spells of heavy rain until August 23, with precautionary measures already underway.

Relief supplies, including food and medicines, are being dispatched under the Prime Minister’s ration package to five districts, while since August 17, around 25,000 flood victims have been rescued and provided medical care.
